Dark gray circular metal medal. The medal has raised edges with a repeating pattern of dots and wavy lines. The top half of the medal's surface reads, "GEOLOGORUM CONVENTUS" in raised letters. Below that, in the center, are two crossed mining tools; a pickaxe and a shovel. Above the tools is a Roman numeral "VII". Below the tools are the numbers "1897" on either side of the word "RUSSIA". The bottom half reads, "+MENDELEEV". The background of the image is light grey. The medal casts a shadow to the lower right.
