Ichikawa Monnosuke II in a Shibaraku Performance

Katsukawa Shunkō

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

A Japanese woodblock print depicts a man's head and shoulders. The man has a pink face with red stripes on his cheeks. He has black eyebrows, black eyes, and black lips. His black hair is styled in a traditional Japanese manner, with a portion of it gathered on top of his head and the rest hanging down on either side of his face in thick locks. He wears a decorative headdress with black, white, and pink elements and triangular zigzag patterns along the edge. A red garment with a geometric white design is visible behind him. There are a few Japanese characters written vertically on the left side of the image. The background of the print is beige, with a white border around the edges.
