Kajikawa School

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Rectangular, rounded-corner container made of dark brown lacquer. A handle curves up from the top. The surface is decorated with images of people on both sides. On one side, a man and a woman stand on a riverbank with blooming white cherry blossom trees. The woman wears a red and orange kimono over a black kimono with white flowers; her hair styled in an updo. The man wears a beige kimono, a pleated brown and black skirt gathered at the waist with a dark brown cord, with a sword at his side. He holds a long-handled tool, while the woman holds a red fan. A large decorative fan is propped on the left. On the other side, a man facing right in a beige kimono holds a pole with a lantern on one end. The man on the right wears a hat and holds a long pole. A tree with white blossoms fills the bottom right. Two people sit on a tree branch on the top right, one wearing orange and the other red. A handle curves up from the top. The sides have gold decorative trim.
