Evening Rain at Karasaki, from the series Eight Views of Ōmi (Ōmi hakkei)

Utagawa Hiroshige

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

A rectangular woodblock print shows an island with several trees and a group of buildings on the shore. The island is surrounded by dark and light blue water. Darker blue shading indicates deeper water in the foreground. The island is connected to a smaller landmass on the left by a thin strip of land. Dark brown trees form a line along the right side of the strip. Most of the buildings are brown. One white building with a brown roof stands on the left. A mountain with two peaks is in the background on the left and another mountain or set of mountains is on the right. The image depicts rain; thin black lines extend diagonally from the top left to bottom right. There is a red seal in the top left and top right corners. A red banner with white Japanese characters extends vertically along the top right edge. Japanese characters are written in black ink across the top. The print has a light brown border.
