Courtier Playing a Flute to Accompany a Bugaku Dance

Kubo Shunman

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

A Japanese woodblock print depicting a man playing a flute while another person performs a dance. The flute player sits on the right side wearing a brown kimono with red trim. He has black hair styled under a black hat and holds a flute to his mouth with his right hand. His left hand rests on a closed fan beside him on the floor. The dancer on the left crouches low with their body facing right. They wear a red and white kimono with a large circular design on the back. Their hair is styled in an elaborate fashion on top of their head, with a red ornament. They hold two swords in their right hand. In the background, a full moon rises over dark clouds. The scene is set against a tiled floor and a wall featuring a window with a blue leaf pattern. Japanese characters are written vertically on the left side. A red seal is visible in the bottom-right corner.
