Ono-no-Komachi Looking at Her Reflection

Katsukawa Shuntei

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image depicts a woman in traditional Japanese clothing sitting on the floor. The woman has long black hair and wears a white kimono with a green leaf pattern, orange undergarments, and a green obi. She sits on a blue floor with her knees bent and legs tucked under her body to one side. Her head is tilted down and to the left, and she gazes into a rectangular mirror she holds in her hands. The mirror's surface reflects the woman's face. The background is beige, with Japanese text written vertically on either side of the woman. The overall composition suggests a traditional Japanese woodblock print.
