Fishes

Seki Shūkō

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image depicts a painting of three fish and other sea creatures. The painting is on a gray background with a gold border around the edges. There are two fish swimming in the water near the top of the painting, and one fish near the bottom right. The fish near the top and middle are similar in shape with a flat body, dorsal fin, and rounded tail fin; the fish near the bottom right appears to be a stingray with a wide, flat body and a long tail. There are several plants and two snails or slugs growing out of the bottom of the painting. The plants appear to be seaweed or kelp. There are several lines of Asian characters written vertically on the right side of the painting. The characters are black with two red seals below. The painting appears to be titled "Fishes" by artist Seki Shūkō.
