Utagawa Kuniyoshi

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Portrait of a man, Yada Gorosaemon Suketake, drawn in a traditional Japanese woodblock style by Utagawa Kuniyoshi. The man wears a white kimono with black, triangular shapes; a red and black patterned undergarment; and a blue and green striped hakama. He holds a blue sword in his right hand, pointed to the left. The man's hair is black and covers the top and sides of his head. The background shows blue and white snow-covered trees on a gray background. Japanese writing appears on a red oval in the upper right; on a beige scroll in the upper center; on a red banner in the upper left; and on a white strip down the center of the man's kimono. Snow flies up from the bottom left.
