Portrait of Muramatsu Sandayu Takanao

Utagawa Kuniyoshi

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

A Japanese man in a traditional outfit with a sword at his side holds a long-handled tool. He wears a blue headband, a white cloth wrapped around his forehead and tied in a bow at the back of his head, a patterned top with long black and white sleeves, and a blue skirt. The man crouches, looking down and to the left, with one hand gripping the handle of the tool and the other near the end. The background features a tree with white flowers and red berries, and several vertical rectangles with Japanese text are present. A rounded red rectangle surrounded by blue is positioned near the top-right corner.
