An Actor as Sadakuro in the Forty–seven Ronins

Katsukawa Shun'ei 勝川春英

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image shows a man in a traditional Japanese outfit, standing and holding a sword. The man has dark hair tied up at the top of his head. He wears a black robe with wide sleeves and a light-colored sash around his waist. His robe is open at the front, revealing a light-colored garment underneath. The man is barefoot and stands with his feet slightly apart. In his right hand, he holds the handle of a long sword with two blades; his left hand grips the sword closer to its blades. A long sword hangs from his belt on the right side. The background of the image is a light brown color with some darker marks and scratches. There are several Japanese characters written vertically on the bottom right side of the image.
