Set of Five Soba Cups (Soba choko) with Interlinked Circles (Shippō)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Five white ceramic soba cups with black interlocking circle pattern. Two cups on the left and right have a more rounded bowl shape with the lip parallel to the table; they are each about 1.5 times as wide as they are tall. The middle left and middle right cups have a more tapered shape with the lip wider than the base; they are about one-third taller than the rounded cups and flare out to a lip that is nearly as wide as the rounded cups. The fifth piece in the center is the base of one of the tapered cups showing a small circular foot in the center; the base is flat with a slight lip. The background is dark gray with light shadows around the pieces.
