Textile fragment with pattern of pages with script and bunraku puppeteers

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Beige-colored textile fragment with a repeating pattern. The pattern consists of irregularly shaped sections resembling pages. The pages contain Japanese script, some written vertically and some written horizontally. Interspersed among the sections are illustrations of people dressed in traditional Japanese clothing operating puppets. The people are depicted in various poses, controlling the puppets which are not clearly visible but suggested by the context. The illustrations show the people seated. The background of the fragment is beige with a slightly darker beige border around the edges. The artist and title of the work are Bunraku puppeteers on pages with script.
