Petticoat

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Petticoat by artist unknown. The image shows a cream-colored, long skirt with a ruffled hem. The skirt appears to be made of a lightweight fabric, possibly cotton or linen, and features horizontal gathering and pleating. A thick layer of gathered fabric creates a ruffle at the bottom of the skirt. The top portion of the skirt is plain while the bottom third has gathered rows of fabric creating texture. The skirt is displayed on a mannequin or dress form against a black background.
