Petticoat

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Petticoat by artist Mary Phelps Jacob features a white skirt displayed on a mannequin. The skirt is made of semi-sheer fabric, possibly cotton or linen, and appears wrinkled. A wide waistband encircles the top. A decorative band with short fringe is positioned approximately one-third of the way up from the bottom. The bottom portion of the skirt features a pattern of intersecting lines and diamond shapes, accompanied by a ruffled hem. The background is black.
