Tetradrachm: Head of Alexander III [The Great] (obverse); Athena (reverse)

Cleveland Museum of Art

The image shows two sides of an ancient silver coin. The left side of the coin features a man's head in profile, facing right. He has short hair, a mustache, and a slight beard. A small part of a fabric or headband is visible on top of his head. The man's facial features are detailed, with lines around his mouth and nose. The right side of the coin depicts a standing woman wearing a long dress and holding a spear in her right hand and a shield in her left. She appears to be wearing a helmet. There is an animal, possibly a lion or dog, at her feet. The background of this side has some raised letters, but they are only partially visible. The coin appears to be made of silver and has a dark patina. It is set against a white background.
