Bullfights: A Spanish Knight Kills the Bull After Having Lost His Horse

Francisco de Goya

Cleveland Museum of Art

The image depicts a scene with a man in armor fighting a bull. The man wears a helmet with a visor and a breastplate with arm guards and greaves. He appears to be on foot, with his left leg forward, and holds a sword or other weapon in his right hand which is thrust into the bull. The bull is on the ground on its side with its head up. A horse is to the right of the bull, possibly rearing up. The background of the image is dark and shadowy. The image is a monochromatic etching with shades of gray on a rectangular piece of paper with a rough texture and a white border around it. The image appears to have been created on a large piece of paper that has a rough edge at the bottom.
