William Blake

Cleveland Museum of Art

The image shows a sepia-toned illustration of a biblical scene. A central panel depicts an older man and woman sitting together under a tree. The man has a long beard and long hair and wears a head covering. He sits on the right and puts an arm around the woman sitting to his left. She has her head bowed down. Three women stand on the left. The woman on the far left holds out a piece of money to the seated man. The top panel shows an angel flying toward the right with the words "The Lord maketh poor and maketh rich" to the left and "He bringeth low and lifteth up" to the right. A line below features a quotation about God providing food when young ones cry. The bottom panel has an image of a reclining man and woman with text underneath that reads, "Every one also gave him a piece of Money." A line below features another quotation. At the bottom are the words "London. Published as the Act directs March 1825. By William Blake N 3 Fountain Court Strand." The background of the image features decorative borders.
