Raja with his Beloved

Cleveland Museum of Art

A painting on aged paper titled 'Raja with his Beloved', created by an Indian artist. The painting depicts a man and a woman sitting on a raised platform; both are wearing traditional Indian clothing. The man sits with his back against a pillow; he wears a white outfit and a large turban. The woman sits on his lap; she wears a gold-colored outfit and a smaller turban. Around them are several female attendants; one on the right holds a peacock-feather fan; another on the left waves a long, flat object. The background features white columns and flowering trees. The scene is set beneath an awning; the awning's edge is orange and patterned. The painting's border is ornate with a black and gold design. In the foreground, two white ducks are on a small pool of water; the pool is surrounded by green with white flowers. The painting's aged paper background shows signs of wear.
