Mahliqa, Daughter of the Emperor of China, Pointing at the Bird-Man Khwaja Mubarak: A Leaf from a Poetical Romance Relating to Shah Alam I (recto)

Cleveland Museum of Art

The painting depicts a scene with a woman and several people on the right side, and a bird-like figure on the left. The woman, Mahliqa, daughter of the Emperor of China, is wearing a purple and yellow dress and pointing to the left. She is surrounded by several other people, including women and a child, all dressed in various colored clothing. On the left side of the painting, there is a large tree with a bird-like figure, Khwaja Mubarak, sitting in it. The background of the painting features a city on a hill, with white buildings and a wall surrounding it. There are also trees and bushes throughout the scene, as well as a body of water at the bottom with several crocodiles. The painting has a gold border with a leaf pattern. The overall scene appears to be a romantic and poetic illustration, possibly from a manuscript. The color palette is vibrant, with shades of green, blue, yellow, purple, and orange.
