Trees and Distant Landscape (from Sketchbook VII)

William Trost Richards

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Black and white sketch on white paper. A dark border outlines a rectangle on the center-right. The sketch depicts a large tree with a gnarled trunk and a dense canopy on the right, and a smaller tree on the far right. A low horizon line separates the trees from a distant landscape that appears to have low structures in the background. A dark line with three small dots bisects the rectangle vertically and intersects the horizon line. The left two thirds of the rectangle is mostly blank.
