Breaking Waves (from Sketchbook VII)

William Trost Richards

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Black and white sketch of crashing waves drawn on two pages of a book. Right page shows a pencil drawing of ocean waves; the left page is blank. The drawing depicts a simple horizon line across the top third of the page with multiple waves drawn below; the wave nearest the bottom of the page folds over on itself and appears to be breaking. The sketch fills the right two-thirds of the book's width. The image shows a thin black border around the book page, with a thick white border around that.
