Smallsword

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Smallsword by English. The hilt of a smallsword features a silver metal pommel and guard. The pommel is spherical and sits atop a short neck. A round medallion on the pommel depicts a man in profile facing left. The guard consists of a cup with a knuckle guard extending from its left side. The knuckle guard twists as it extends away from the pommel, then bends downward. The guard is decorated with scrollwork at the base. The grip is wrapped with black cord in a herringbone pattern, with metal bands at the top and bottom. The blade shows a yellow and gold etched design. The background is gray.
