Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The tsuba has a brown patina; it is square-shaped with rounded corners, and two oval-shaped holes; one horizontal and large on the left side; and one vertical and narrow in the center. A relief figure of a man protrudes from the right; he has black hair swept back and wears a long-sleeved robe; his right arm is raised toward the top, and his left arm holds a branch; the branch extends downward and to the left; gold accents are on cuffs and robe; a floral pattern is etched on the robe.
