Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image depicts a sword guard (Tsuba) by an unknown artist. The Tsuba is circular and made of dark brown metal, possibly iron or steel, with a dark patina. The guard has a scalloped edge and is decorated with swirling cloud patterns. Two rectangular cutouts are on either side of a central, elongated triangular cutout. Two muscular, demonic figures with large stomachs and horn-like protrusions on their foreheads are on either side. The demons have gold accents on their bodies and are holding weapons. The background of the image is light gray.
