Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Round metal object with a darkened patina, primarily gray with areas of blue and reddish-brown. Three cut-out shapes: one central vertical slit and two kidney-shaped openings on either side. A raised design of a horse in motion with a flowing mane and tail, and blue inlaid spots on its body. The horse faces left and appears to be running. A curved, flame-like design on the left edge. Small, engraved Japanese characters on the right side. The object has a weathered appearance with scratches on its surface.
