Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Tsuba by an unknown artist features a circular metal piece with a brown-gray color and a textured surface. The surface texture is formed by small bumps and pits arranged in various patterns across the surface. The circular piece has three cutouts: one long vertical cutout in the middle and two rounded cutouts on either side. The vertical cutout is teardrop-shaped, with the pointed end facing downwards. The two rounded cutouts are positioned on either side of the vertical cutout, with the left one being an oval shape and the right one resembling a cloverleaf or a heart shape with the top curved. The background of the image is plain white.
