The First Onoe Kikugoro as an Angry Man

Katsukawa Shunshō 勝川春章

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

A Japanese woodblock print depicts a man with a receding hairline and thinning hair on top, styled in a traditional Japanese manner, with two buns on either side of his head. He has a thick, rounded face, and his mouth is downturned. He wears a kimono with a beige base color and a wave pattern. The kimono has short, wide sleeves and a sash tied around the waist. A red under-kimono with geometric designs is visible beneath the outer garment. The man stands barefoot, with his weight on his right leg and his left foot slightly raised. He holds a sword with a long, thin handle in his right hand, pointing upwards and behind him, while his left hand grasps the front of his kimono. A long piece of fabric trails on the ground behind him. The background is beige with a reddish-brown line near the bottom. Above, a tan section features vertical lines. Small black Japanese characters are visible on the right side.
