The Fifth Ichikawa Danjuro as a Samurai

Katsukawa Shunkō

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image depicts a Japanese woodblock print of a man dressed as a samurai. The man has long black hair and a mustache and goatee. He wears a traditional samurai outfit consisting of a patterned robe with red, orange, and brown colors over a dark skirt-like garment. A light-colored sash wraps around his waist, and he holds a sword in his right hand. His feet are bare except for straps around his ankles. The background features wavy lines, possibly representing water or hills, against a beige backdrop. The artist's signature is visible on the right side.
