Poem by Henjō Sojō

Suzuki Harunobu

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image depicts a scene with two people, a man and a woman, in traditional Japanese clothing. The man sits on a low stool, wearing a headband and robe, with his left leg bare; he appears to be working on something on a low table in front of him, with a large cylindrical container beside him on the floor, from which small round objects have spilled. The woman stands to his right, wearing a robe and a hair decoration; she holds a large container. The background features a dark wall with a window on the left, and a green wall on the right with a bamboo fence and plants visible through it. Japanese characters are written along the top and on the right side. The scene is titled "Poem by Henjō Sojō" and attributed to artist Suzuki Harunobu.
