Buddha with His Hands Raised in Dharmacakra Mudra, Leaf from a dispersed Pancavimsatisahasrika Prajnaparamita Manuscript

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image depicts a Buddhist manuscript page with a central illustration and text on either side. The central figure is a large Buddha with a yellow face, wearing a red robe and sitting cross-legged on a lotus flower. His hands are raised in a mudra gesture. He has a green halo around his head and a red background behind him. Two smaller figures, also wearing red robes, sit on either side of the Buddha. The figure on the left has their hands clasped together in prayer, while the figure on the right extends their right hand. The text on either side of the image is written in black ink and appears to be in an ancient language, possibly Sanskrit or Tibetan. The background of the manuscript page is a light brown color, resembling aged paper. The image is framed by a yellow border. The overall appearance suggests an ancient or antique piece of Buddhist art.
