Petticoat

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Petticoat by an unknown artist. The image shows a long pale green skirt made of silk or similar fabric. The top part of the skirt is plain with a slight sheen and a horizontal seam about one third of the way up from the bottom. Below the seam is a wide section of gathered fabric with thin vertical stripes in black, brown and yellow. Two more horizontal stripes encircle the skirt just above the hem. The skirt is displayed on a waist-high wooden stand with a white top. The skirt appears to be mid-19th century. The background is plain off-white.
