Medal of Claude Joseph Rouget de L'Isle (1760-1836)

Bronze medal with two sides. The left side has a profile view of a man's head and shoulders. The man has long hair parted in the middle and combed to either side. He wears a jacket with a high collar. There is text around the rim, in a semicircle, that reads, "ROUGET DE L'ISLE." The right side has small text covering most of the surface. In the center is a bas-relief of a woman standing on a pedestal with a torch in her right hand and a broken chain and shackles on the ground to her left. The background of the image is gray, getting darker towards the top. The medal casts a shadow on the surface below.
