Three Cuttings from a Missal: Initial C with the Adoration of the Magi

Cleveland Museum of Art

Medieval-style illustration of the Adoration of the Magi. The scene is framed in a large, gold-bordered initial letter "C". Inside the letter, a woman with a gold headpiece and blue robe sits on the left, holding a naked baby. To her right are three men: - The one furthest right wears a white robe and a crown and holds a gold vase. - The one in the middle wears a brown robe and a crown and holds a gold vase. - The one furthest left wears a red cape over a black robe, a crown, and a gold belt; he holds a gold candlestick with one candle. The figures are surrounded by a decorative red and blue border with gold accents on a beige background. The red and blue borders have a patterned design resembling leaves or scrollwork. The entire image is on a black background.
