Printed Book of Hours (Use of Rome): fol. 2v, January calendar illustration

Guillaume Le Rouge

Cleveland Museum of Art

Medieval-style illustration of a scene with a gold frame. The frame has a decorative top and bottom, and the word "January" is written in red at the top center. Inside the frame, three people are shown in a courtyard-like setting between two buildings with stone walls. One person sits on a gold pillar; a cherub sits on top of the pillar. The people are dressed in colorful clothing, including orange, blue, green, and yellow. The person on the left wears a blue and green dress and holds a broom. The person on the right wears an orange tunic and appears to throw a bundle of sticks. A child crouches beside them. Below the illustration, there is a block of text written in black and red ink. The text appears to be in Latin and includes several abbreviations and decorative letters.
