Andiron

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Black and white photograph of andirons. Seven sets of andirons arranged in a line. Each set consists of two vertical posts connected by a horizontal bar near the bottom. The posts have variously shaped finials on top. The finials are spheres, ellipsoids, or a combination of spheres and cylinders. The posts are usually straight but sometimes have one or more decorative spheres along their length. The posts usually have three legs at the bottom and sometimes they are on small feet. The background is plain and light.
