Sugar Bowl

Thomas Shields

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Sugar Bowl by Thomas Shields is a silver-colored, lidded container. The bowl has a wide, rounded body with a short, fluted foot and a decorative border around the base. A large, ornate monogram is etched into the front, consisting of the letters "T", "S", and "D" intertwined in a floral pattern. A small handle is on either side. The lid is domed with a decorative finial on top and a decorative border around the edge that matches the one on the bowl. The background of the image is gray, gradually getting darker towards the top.
