Sugar Bowl and Cover

John Bayly

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Sugar Bowl and Cover by John Bayly is a silver-colored, lidded vessel. The bowl is rounded and sits on a short, wide pedestal base with two raised rings at the top. The body of the bowl features an engraved design with a floral pattern. A handle-less, domed lid covers the top, also with an engraved floral pattern around the rim. A finial in the shape of a bird, possibly a duck or goose with spread wings, crowns the lid. The background of the image is gray, dark at the top and light at the bottom.
