"Blind" Shaffron (Horse's Head Defense) for the Joust

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Metal horse head defense for jousting, made by Shaffron. The defense is shaped like a horse's head and neck. The metal is silver-colored, with a smooth, weathered finish. It has a central ridge running down the middle, with symmetrical curved sections on either side. The top section has a starburst-shaped piece with 12 pointed sections, held on with small rivets. The defense has a row of rivets around the starburst piece. The bottom section has two curved sections with a small gap in between. The background is light gray, with a slight shadow behind the defense.
