Fujimigahara in Owari Province (Bishū Fujimigahara), from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei)

Katsushika Hokusai

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

A man wearing a dark-colored loincloth is hunched over near the bottom center of the image, touching the inside of a very large circular wood frame propped on its side. The frame has thin rectangular lines drawn horizontally across it. The man has short hair. A tree with a thin curved trunk is behind and to the left of the man, and a field with lines in it is to his right. A low line of trees and a mountain are visible on the horizon. The sky transitions from blue at the top to orange near the horizon. A short white rectangle with Japanese writing is in the top-left corner. Japanese characters are also written in red in the bottom-right corner.
