Pair of Negoro Lacquer Candlesticks

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image shows a pair of reddish-brown candlesticks. The candlesticks have a wide base that tapers into a rounded section, then flares out slightly and tapers again into a long, thin section with three raised rings. The top section is a short, flared piece, and then a shallow dish with a small, pointed metal spike in the center. The candlesticks are made of lacquer and have a glossy finish. They are identical and symmetrical. The background is a gradient from dark gray at the top to light gray at the bottom.
