Tobiuo and Ishimochi Fish, from the series Uozukushi (Every Variety of Fish)

Utagawa Hiroshige

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

A blue and white fish with a long body and pointed snout faces left on top of a smaller white fish that also faces left. The blue fish has darker blue on its back and lighter on its underside. Both fish are illustrated in profile. A red flower is placed behind the fish. The background fades from beige at the top to light blue at the bottom. There are several lines of Japanese text written vertically on the right side and one line on the left side. A red seal stamp or signature appears near the bottom center and bottom left.
